Homemade Doggy Style Pretzels

Treat Yo' Dog Recipes

For New Year’s Eve, we typically make a bunch of appetizers for dinner as a tradition. We like to indulge in it all, from cocktail shrimp, deep-fried pickles to wings and pretzels. As an Edmonton pet parent, we often include our pets in our celebrations where we can! This New Year’s Eve, we’re making doggy style pretzels for our pup to enjoy. Put a hold on the beer cheese for your dog’s pretzels, of course!

Here’s what you’ll need to get started!

Equipment

  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Baking Sheet
  • Mixing Bowls or Machine Mixer
  • Cooling Rack

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups of Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1 Cup of Peanut Butter
  • 1 Cup of Milk
  • 1 Tablespoon of Baking Powder
Ingredients for Doggy Style Pretzels

*Important Note* – If you are using any sugar-free products, you must ensure there is no xylitol in the ingredients. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener used in many sugar-free products and is extremely harmful to dogs. In-fact xylitol is much more toxic than even chocolate is for your dog.

Directions

First things first, let’s get everything prepped! Start by preheating your oven to 375°F and lightly greasing your baking sheets. You can grease the pans with butter/margarine or use a cooking spray to do so.

Take out two mixing bowls, one for the dry ingredients and one for the wet ingredients. Combine your flour and baking powder in one bowl, then the peanut butter and milk in the other. Then mix your dry ingredients into the wet, and ensure you have a well-combined mixture.

Once your mixture comes together it should stick enough into a ball. The consistency is a little finicky but should hold together where you’re able to roll out a rope. You may have to use a little pressure when rolling out the dough to keep it from crumbling.

Roll out a rope that’s about 3-5 inches long and about 1/4-1/2 inch in diameter. We don’t need them too big! Take either end of the rope to form a circle. Twist the ends once or twice, bring the ends toward the bottom of the circle and press down. You may have to wet the dough with some water for the ends to stick.

This dough doesn’t expand much so there is no need to space them out when baking. We recommend leaving about a 1/2 inch of space between each pretzel. Pop them into the oven for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Place pretzels on a cooling rack and let them cool completely before storing them in an air-tight container. Which will help reduce the amount of moisture and help extend their shelf life.

Then treat yo’ doggy to a couple of pretzels! Keep the rest in an air-tight container for up to a week or freeze them for longer shelf life.
