Looking for a Rover Alternative in Edmonton? Here’s What to Know

If you’ve found yourself searching for a Rover alternative in Edmonton, you’re probably not doing it out of curiosity. Something happened. A last-minute cancellation, a walk that felt off, a story from a neighbour that made you think twice. Whatever it was, you’re asking a real question and you deserve a real answer.

Why people start looking for something different

Rover and platforms like it are built on a marketplace model. They connect pet owners with independent contractors and take a percentage of each booking. For some services, that works fine. Pet care is more complicated.

The challenge is consistency. When you book through a marketplace, you’re essentially hiring a new person each time, with varying experience and no standardized training. Vetting is often self-reported. Reviews can be gamed. And when something goes wrong, the platform’s involvement usually stops at customer service.

None of this means everyone on those platforms does a poor job. Many are genuinely good with animals. But the structure makes quality control difficult, and with pet care, inconsistency has real consequences.

What professional local pet care actually looks like

Our employees are trained before they ever meet your pet. Every Dog Jogs team member goes through a formal orientation covering our policies and procedures, completes a dog body language course, and spends time in the field alongside our Head Joggers before taking on visits independently. That in-field training is where they learn to read different behaviours, understand how to manage them in real situations, and build confidence with dogs of all temperaments. If someone is struggling with a specific dog or behaviour after that, we offer additional support. This is not a gig. It is a job, with actual training behind it.

Our team comes prepared for what actually happens on a walk. Each employee carries emergency treats (though we always prefer to use your pet’s own food given how common allergies are), poop bags, a rope toy for redirection, hand sanitizer, a dog bowl and water for warmer months, and a first aid kit. A rope toy might sound like a small thing until your dog decides a squirrel is more interesting than the walk. These are not people winging it.

They notice things owners sometimes miss. Because our team sees your pet regularly, they catch changes. We have had employees flag ear infections from a dog repeatedly shaking its head or pawing at its ears. We have spotted blood in urine during potty breaks that turned out to be a UTI. We have noticed worms in stool and alerted owners before it became a bigger problem. One of our cat sitting clients had a cat who was clearly unwell while her owner was in the hospital. Our team got that cat to the vet. None of this is in the job description, but it is what happens when the people caring for your pet are paying attention.

We offer dog jogs for dogs that need more than a walk. Not every dog is built for a leisurely stroll. We currently work with doodles, Boston Terriers, Brittany Spaniels, and plenty of others who need to move to feel settled. Both small and large dogs can jog with us depending on energy level, body type, and endurance. We run 10-pound terriers and 100-pound Great Pyrenees crosses. Every jogging dog has vet approval, and we do not jog dogs under 12 months of age without written clearance from a vet. Routes and pace vary by neighbourhood and weather. We do not promise a specific distance because we follow what is safe for your dog that day, not a number on a fitness app.

Your pet never gets left without care because someone called in sick. Dog Jogs is team-based, which means your pet’s details live in our system, not in one person’s head. With keyless entry or a lockbox, there is no disruption when a team member is unavailable. Another trusted Dog Jogs employee steps in seamlessly. Your dog does not miss their walk. Your cat does not miss their visit. That kind of reliability is only possible because we are a real company with a real team, not a one-person operation booked through an app.
